HBO Drops Major Casting News for Harry Potter Series
The magic is officially in motion! HBO has just dropped a dazzling round of casting announcements for its highly anticipated Harry Potter TV series — and it’s bringing together some serious talent to breathe new life into the beloved wizarding world.
As reported by BBC News, I May Destroy You star Paapa Essiedu will take on the iconic role of Severus Snape, while the ever-elegant Janet McTeer (from Ozark and Jessica Jones) will don the tartan and take up the post of Professor McGonagall. And in perhaps the coziest casting yet, British comedy legend Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) is stepping into Hagrid’s oversized boots.
Also joining the Hogwarts staff? The incomparable Paul Whitehouse as grumpy caretaker Argus Filch, and the previously announced John Lithgow (The Crown, 3rd Rock from the Sun), who’s set to bring some gravitas and warmth to the role of Albus Dumbledore.

While the trio at the center of the story — Harry, Ron, and Hermione — remain uncast, HBO has reportedly received over 30,000 submissions for the roles. Talk about an enchanted inbox.
Filming kicks off this summer, with the first season possibly hitting screens as early as next year. And with Successionveterans Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod steering the ship, expectations are high for a stylish, emotionally rich reimagining.
This TV adaptation promises to dig deeper into J.K. Rowling’s original novels than the blockbuster film series ever could. Speaking of Rowling — she’s onboard as an executive producer, with HBO pledging a “faithful adaptation” of the books.
Of course, rumors are already swirling about other additions to the cast. Most buzzworthy? Whispers that Cillian Murphy could be circling the role of He Who Must Not Be Named. If that’s true, we may be getting a very cool, very creepy Voldemort.
Fans old and new are ready to return to Hogwarts — and this time, it looks like they’ll be staying awhile.
Stay tuned. More magic is just around the corner.
